Carrot Electronic Grading “Putting it through its Pace”
15th January 2006
The latest development in Herbert optical grading has produced a carrot machine capable of sorting on length, diameter and defect. The system has been undergoing stringent testing during May and June 2005 and is able to separate carrots based on diameter, length and surface defects. Customers who have seen the system in operation have total confidence in its potential for labour saving and increased performance against traditional methods of grading/inspection. R J Herbert Engineering are currently planning the installation of up to six systems over the next twelve months.
Defects such as white colour, dark spots, green, cuts and rots may be sorted with future development to look at symmetry and broken tips for inclusion in the defect detection list. With a capacity of approx. 3-6tph depending on carrot size required we provide for the classification into 3 qualities. This makes grades of Class 1, waste and another grade which may be Class 2 or may be a special size/grade. The 3rd quality provides an opportunity to add value to the product or just to generate a lower value product without needing to re-grade the waste. All of this is done using the proven technology used in the existing range of quality sorting machines for potatoes in operation throughout Europe.
